Suji Sheet

Suji Sheet

I’m off for a few days to run a strategy seminar in France.

Most of the strategy seminars I’ve run have been closer to how I was trained in JPML. However, this one I’m trying to focus more on the content that can be found in written articles (and what may be considered standard knowledge for a riichi player in Japan?!). And in particular suji.

I made a suji chart to help me and I put it here for you to enjoy!

Someone one approached me and said I should NOT be teaching things like ura suji, matagi suji etc. because Western players may misunderstand and key professional players have declared them not effective anymore. Certainly it is not revolutionary to say these techniques don’t work in the modern game.

Let me make it clear, I also don’t agree that all of this suji are effective tools. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t think they shouldn’t be taught. How can we as players say that these don’t mean anything until we understand them; that’s just bad science!

And I still think there is some great value in understanding how the tiles interact and the relationships between wait shapes, hand shapes, and discard pools.

We should never limit ourselves in the pursuit of knowledge. Learn suji, accept its limitations, and reject it later if you will.

I can also talk more about these theories refuting ura suji etc. but I need to make sure the information is out there first.

If there is something you’ve read or seen in particular, let me know in the comments and I’ll put it on the growing to-do list!

See you after France!
